A Letter to the Grandkids

An open letter to the grandkids…

Each of you have been on my mind. I know you are giving thought to a career and what you plan to do in life to support yourself. You’ve come to that time where you are grappling with how to support yourself and eventually your family. This is a critical time for you. I’m of the opinion life is too short to invest your work days in activity that bores you. I’ve discovered it is important to love your work. Your job ought to be something that gives you an invigorating reason to get up in the morning. May I make a suggestion? Pursue a job that does more than put meat and potatoes on the table. Think about more than making a lot of money.

By this I don’t mean you should necessarily make your living from the gospel like Nana and I have done(However, I assure you, it is not a bad way to make a living). But it is possible in whatever job description you choose, to do it heartily as unto the Lord and for the good and well-being of others.

Your life-choice of employment ought to bring opportunity allowing God to stretch you beyond all you could ask or think. Little effort and big compensation ought not be your prime consideration. You will find the work-world filled with people who make big bucks but are never satisfied with what they have. You will meet frustrated people who hate what they do day in and day out. Please understand God has created you for much more than that. There is nothing like the feeling a child of God gets when he/she feels they have made a difference in the life of another person.

In the end, we all leave a legacy behind. When your pilgrimage on this earth is over, you will want to feel you made a difference. For you, hearing, “well done, good and faithful servant” ought to be important. For now, this is the time in your life when you need to ask and answer the question, “What can I do with my time on this earth that will enable me to feel I lived a life well spent?” What can I invest in this world that makes a difference for God’s kingdom?

You are young. This is an exciting time in your life and we love watching it unfold for you. Make your work count for something beyond yourself.

Love,
Papa and Nana
