Dave’s Monday Blast – August 18, 2025

My bride and I went camping the last two weekends with our granddaughter. She is half way through her third year on this planet, and these were her first times away from her folks overnight. They live in their own space on our property so we see her every day but have been really looking forward to taking her over night for some adventures!

We all had a wonderful time. The first weekend we camped right on a lake where we found it nearly impossible to get her out of the water. Just yesterday we returned from camping-adventure number two on a beautiful creek while attending a Hot Air Balloon festival.

I was reminded throughout both weekends of two things:

1. I am too old to be raising a grandchild full time, but LOVE the partnership with my son and daughter-in-law. I commend the nearly 10% of grandparents in this country that have assumed this responsibility full time. I know that any number of you INTENTIONAL men of God are part of this 10%  and I have seen the results of this sacrifice first hand.

2. Children are the most incredible gift (beyond the salvation God provides) that God gives to His children. And when God gives your children their own children…well…the quiver cycle is indeed full (Psalm 127:3 – 5). “Behold, children are a gift of the Lord, The fruit of the womb is a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, So are the children of one’s youth. How blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them; When they speak with their enemies in the gate.”

Take a few minutes and read Psalm 128 as the contextual follow up to Psalm 127 specific to children and your children’s children. Grand baby number 2 is a little fellow (1 1/2) years of age, and we are already looking forward to our first camping trip with him. There is a third one in the oven (due in November), another little girl. My oh my…a quiver full!

In this world, where so many children are discarded and exploited, we must constantly be reminded of just how much our Lord loves all His children (and how much Satan hates them), but has a very special place in His heart for the little ones. We catch a glimpse of this truth in Mark 10:13 – 16. “And they were bringing children to Him so that He might touch them; but the disciples rebuked them. But when Jesus saw this, He was indignant and said to them, ‘Permit the children to come to Me; do not hinder them; for the Kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it at all.’ And He took them in His arms and began blessing them, laying His hand on them.”

I think that one of the very best things about grandbabies is that they remind us once again of the wonders of this world as they stop and look at everything. We call it being easily distracted and say “they aren’t listening”. The truth is they simply have young eyes…the eyes of these precious little ones. So brothers…embrace the moments…slow down the pace…be present…be as curious as the little ones.
