Happy Labor day! I suspect most of you are super busy, but hopefully not at work!
Habits…good and bad. I love reading just about anything Max Lucado writes. There are many remarkable Christian Thinkers to choose from when one is seeking insight into a particular area of Christian living. But I seek out the likes of Max Lucado because he helps me see issues of life from God’s perspective; he helps me see life through God’s eyes, not my own.
Last night I was chiding myself for my lack of a truly consistent prayer time. As is often the case the Holy Spirit led me to Lucado’s blog where he just happened to be writing about “Prayer as a Habit Worth Having”. He begins by asking a very baited, rhetorical question, “Do you want to know how to deepen your prayer life?” Yes, I do! His advice is to begin by checking your habits.
In Romans 12:12, Paul says, “When trials come endure them patiently; steadfastly maintain the habit of prayer.” Prayer is a habit worth having. Don’t prepare to pray. Just pray. Don’t read about prayer. Just pray. Don’t attend a lecture or conference on prayer. Just pray. Don’t engage in a discussion about prayer. Just pray.
Posture, tone, and place are personal matters. Select the form that works for you and then just pray. But don’t think about it too much. Don’t be too concerned about wrapping the gift that you never give it. Better to pray awkwardly than not at all. And if you feel you should only pray when inspired to do so, that’s alright, just see to it that you are inspired every day. Thanks Max, that helps!
So men, be INTENTIONAL about developing that good habit of praying.
