Every person has a worldview or philosophy of life that influences how they think, act, and perceive reality. The fundamental questions that all worldviews must answer are called “The three great questions of life” 1. What is the origin of life? (How did I get here?) 2. What is the meaning of life? (What is my purpose?) 3. What is our ultimate destiny? (What happens when I die?). How a person answers these three most basic questions will influence everything else in their life: their value for human beings, their basis for morality, their purpose for living, and even their standard of living.
The two most basic worldviews are Theism and Atheism. Theism affirms that there is a God; and Atheism declares that there is no God. The word theism comes from the Greek word theos, meaning God. When you add ology to the end of the word it means the study of. When you add the article A to the beginning of a word it means not or no and you get the word Atheist, meaning no God. Both of these worldviews have profound implications and numerous important questions that arise from them. Pastor Charles Stanley comments: “Many people have misconceptions about God, imagining that He compromises on sin, accepts everyone’s choices, or always blesses. Even Christians can have an inaccurate understanding of the Lord. In fact, we all do to some degree, because He is infinitely unfathomable. Human beings can only grasp ‘the fringes of His ways”‘ (Job 26:14).
It is a wrong, or incomplete view of God, that creates for some; this crisis that they define as Atheism. I want to spend a little time over the next couple of weeks considering who God is, and to declare that in the knowing, how could I ever choose not to believe, worship, obey, and love Him in return for His unconditional love for all humankind.
So in preparation for the next two weeks please give some consideration to the following:
1. If you had to describe God to someone else, what would you say? And how would you know if your view was right?
2. How can we know the truth about Him?
