Dave’s Monday Blast – October 23, 2023
Last week we were chatting a bit about the Minutemen from the American Revolution. Citizen soldiers always prepared to defend the boundaries of their habitation, like the people of Israel under Nehemiah (Nehemiah 4:17), and the Church as described in 2 Timothy 2:4.
One of the challenges we face today as the Church is finding ways to tactfully share our Christian Convictions on the controversial Cultural issues of our days. Of course to be Minutemen for His Kingdom we must have a strong Biblical apologetic.
Christian Ministries International, one of my go-to Christian organizations helping us to articulate our Biblical Worldview, shares these simple talking points as we engage our culture on topics that we are both VERY passionate about:
1. When asked for your opinion on a controversial topic, first ask your questioner, “Do you consider yourself to be an open-minded person who is tolerant of people who hold different beliefs from yours?” This question will disarm your discussion of ad hominem attacks (calling you names like “bigot”) and force them to engage in a rational discussion of the issue and your beliefs.
2. Explain that all of your personal beliefs as a Christian ultimately rest on three fundamental questions: Is there a God? Has He spoken? And if so, will we obey?
3. Point out that is God exists, and if He’s spoken on a given issue, the only appropriate response from us is obedience. (After all…He is God)
4. Share what God has revealed as truth on the issue you’re discussing. If your partner protests, remind them that our personal opinions are irrelevant IF God exists and if He’s spoken.
5. Offer to examine these fundamental questions with your discussion partner. Continue to point them to the evidence of a Creator who has revealed truth to His creation.
Next week I want to unpack the apologetic on the evidence of our Creator through His General and Special Revelation.
