Dave’s Monday Blast – October 16, 2023

I have an academic background in history, having taught in that field for years. My passion was American Studies in general, and the early years of our founding as a nation in particular. Many of you will remember learning about the so-called Minutemen during our revolution. They were ordinary citizens who banded together to form an effective army. They consisted of farmers, merchants, bankers, and blacksmiths.

When they heard about trouble with the British forces, they would drop what they were doing, grab their muskets, and head into battle. No rummaging around through the attic looking for that powerhorn. No searching the shed for wadding and shot. No stopping to clean their guns. They were ready in a minute. Of course this moniker will remind INTENTIONAL men of God of this passage in 2 Timothy 4:2: “…preach the Word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction.”

I discovered an old devotional from OUR DAILY BREAD the other day and to this discussion they add: “The workman of Nehemiah’s day who held their tools in one hand and their swords or spears in the other. Even as they worked, they were ready for conflict.” (Nehemiah 4:17)

We need to be God’s minutemen. We should be prepared for action in season and out! It may be an opportunity to witness or to encourage a fellow believer facing fierce temptation. Someone in the workplace may be attacking the cause of Christ. Are we ready?

We shouldn’t have to revive our prayer-life or take care of unresolved issues with God. No hunting for dusty Bibles. No forgiveness to seek or offer. No last-minute confession of sin. If He calls, are you one of God’s modern day Minutemen?
