A leading “Organizational Psychologist” (I did not know there was such a thing) was recently employed by companies such as Google, Wells Fargo and Warner Brothers to provide strategies for effectively “managing people”. In a published interview summarizing his findings the author made a statement that is both simple and significant: “What we spend the majority of our waking lives doing should be something we find valuable and rewarding.”
You would think it wouldn’t take a best-selling psychologist to point out this fact. But are you following his advice? Here is the question of the day: What mission defines your life? Perhaps a better question is this: Whose mission defines your life?
Recently, Jordan Spieth won the British Open in record fashion. The 24 year-old rallied with three birdies and an eagle to defeat 39 year-old Matt Kuchar, an experienced professional who has never won a major championship. In spite of a very disappointing loss, Kuchar never lost his smile or the gracious spirit that has made him so popular with players and fans. Besides golf, what do these two have in common? They are both Christ-Followers. They are both committed to being the best golf professionals they can be (the top of their class), but more importantly, they are committed to using their influence for the Kingdom of God.
What “class” do you aspire to be at the top of?
There is only one way to live a life of transcendent, transformational purpose: we must give ourselves to the transcendent, transformational King of the Universe. David testified: “I cry out to God Most High, to God who fulfills His purpose for me” (Psalm 57:2). Before God could do the latter, David had to do the former. So must we.
Rick Warren says it this way, “You were made by God and for God, and until you understand that, life will never make sense.” Does your life make sense today my friends? If not…perhaps you are “off mission”. Perhaps someone or something is defining your life mission other than God. Spend some time today studying 2 Corinthians 5:14 & 15 to understand what kind of motivation is necessary for us to stay on His Mission.
