Dave’s Monday Blast – November 1, 2021

Can we be hopeful in times of disbelief? Being a follower of Christ is hard these days. These are days of disbelief and as a result, many feel hopeless. (Psalm 2 ) begins with “Help, Lord.” This is a familiar prayer these days isn’t it?

In this brief poem King David complains that there is no one faithful. No one seemed reliable. He is grieved and fearful because there was little loyalty and lots of lies. Apparently, he lived in a time of “fake news” like we do. People were adept at flattery, the use of compliments for the purposes of manipulation and power. They were also good at outright deception.

In (v. 4) we read, “They say, ‘Through our tongues we have power, our lips are our own, who can be our master?'” That sounds so much like today’s social and news media world. David goes on to point out that his “no-truth” culture was producing oppression of all kinds. Those who were weak, vulnerable and disadvantaged for various reasons were paying the biggest price in the age of disbelief and deception. No wonder the Father is so focused on the disadvantaged and down-trodden in every age.

Dr. Mark Turman comments: If we focus on the hurting, we will be focused on where God is focused. That’s good isn’t it!

David finishes this short song with encouragement. We can be sure that God’s word is always the shining silver of truth (v.6). God has not lost His voice or His witness.

Further, David declares that God will guard and guide us in this disbelieving generation even as “the wicked prowl all around, and what is worthless is exalted by the human race” (v.8). Let’s hold on to that promise! I mean it! Hold on to His promises!
